Before any details were released about the Florida school shooting, I was braced for the same round of ridiculous “thoughts and prayers” that political leaders seem to default to. Within 48 hours, the strongest responses were not politicians, second amendment groups, or gun-control advocates—but the students themselves who actually lived through the shooting. Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have announced the "March For Our Lives," in Washington D.C., on March 24 and called for other cities to join them in a call for gun reform legislation. They have directly called out the president and Republican lawmakers by name and condemned their ties to the National Rifle Association. Student David Hogg to the Washington Post: “Instead of condolences, give us action. There is something seriously wrong here.” Article Huffpost/Highline: What Bullets do to Bodies by Jason Fagone We are inundated with news about shootings. We get names, places, anguished Facebook posts, statistics on crime rates and risk, arguments about the Second Amendment—everything except the blood. What do surgeons know about gun violence that the rest of us don’t? Article Slate Magazine: The Judicious RBG by Dalia Lithwick Justice Ginsburg never allows herself to talk about politics explicitly, has declined to speak about Trump or Merrick Garland or the future of the Supreme Court. Looking at that pattern, you might think she’s confining herself to platitudes. That isn’t the case. “I try to think before I speak.” Article Salon: Reject Trump’s judicial nominee for his complicity in torture by Senator Tammy Duckworth The Senate will shortly vote on the confirmation of Howard Nielson — who worked with Steven Bradbury, another Trump appointee, on the Bush torture memos — to a lifetime appointment as a federal judge, despite his unapologetic defense of torture and those who sanctioned it. Podcast WNYC/On The Media: The Safety Net Just Got a Little Less Safe (27 min) In the second budget proposal of his presidency, Donald Trump offers more money for defense, veterans and border security—and heavy cuts to federal assistance programs including a 20 percent cut to Section 8 housing, a 22 percent cut to Medicaid and a brutal 27 percent cut to SNAP (the benefit formerly known as food stamps).  STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts I didn't get the memo Have you been paying attention to or trying to make sense of the drama around the Nunes memo? I really did my best to catch up, after ignoring the hype all week. This piece in the New Yorker clarifies the controversy as well as anything I’ve read—although it still seems kinda pointless to me. Maybe the point, as some are saying, is to clear the way for Trump to fire or discredit Robert Mueller. That seems to be a long shot, considering Mueller’s long-standing reputation for integrity. Podcast: Smithsonian Sidedoor: Enslaved and Muslim in Early America (31 min) Today, the US population is about 1% Muslim, but in the late 1700s that number was likely closer to 5%. Who were these early Muslim-Americans? We get a glimpse of American history's missing Muslims though the words of Omar ibn Said, an enslaved Muslim man in North Carolina whose one-of-a-kind autobiography still resonates today. Report: Southern Poverty Law Center: Teaching the Hard History of American Slavery with Preface by Hasan Kwame Jeffries and Introduction by David Blight “Our problem as Americans is we actually hate history. What we love is nostalgia.” The Southern Poverty Law Center surveyed U.S. high school seniors and social studies teachers, analyzed a selection of state content standards, and reviewed 10 popular U.S. history textbooks—and found that we, as a nation, are failing to adequately teach the hard history of American slavery.
