The mistresses! The immigration restrictions! The incoherent speeches! Is it Harding or is it Trump? STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts Principled Partisan The tributes from politicians and journalists on the death of John McCain show a real appreciation for his ideas of patriotism and service. I hope that our lawmakers will be inspired by his example and step up in the coming months. Last October Senator John McCain was awarded the National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal; here is his acceptance speech. I swear I’m trying to keep this list to 3 items, but seriously! Maybe in one year things will be more tranquil, and my weekly list will consist of baseball scores and casserole recipes. --Kathy Sherretts Department of DejaVu: The Daily Beast: Sex Scandals and ‘America First’: Warren G. New Veterans Administration Headquarters? STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts Don't know much about history...? Or geography, apparently. What's with the confederate flag here in PA, anyway? Mounted beside the US flag? They don't go together, you know. (There's a popular version of the two flags merged together. With a Don't Tread On Me snake in the center. Aside from the cognitive dissonance, it’s a design nightmare.) And Pennsylvania is solidly north of the Mason-Dixon line in any case. Here is another site with concise information on voting and registration requirements, searchable by state: Overseas Vote, an initiative of the U.S. Vote Foundation. The site provides tools and information services to voters to simplify absentee ballot requests. --Kathy Sherretts Article: Fast Company: This is how tiny changes in words you hear impacts your thinking By Vivian Giang People do not necessarily vote in their self-interest. Taking up rage-knitting? (Photo: Emily Manktelow for Slate) STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts What to watch for... • It's been one year since the violence in Charlottesville, VA; to mark the anniversary, this year's "Unite the Right 2" rallied in front of the White House, where they perhaps thought they would be among friends. • Paul Manafort's trial goes into week 3. • The Boston Globe is calling on editorial boards of newspapers nationwide to write and publish editorials on Aug. 16 denouncing President Donald Trump’s ‘‘dirty war against the free press.’’ • Take the opportunity to weigh in with your senator ahead of Brett Kavenaugh's confirmation hearings, scheduled for early September. Don't let Trump's nominee slide onto the Supreme Court bench without getting a couple splinters in his bum. There's more, of course, but that's all I have brain space for right now. —Kathy Sherretts Article: Slate: Felted Red Faces and Crocheted Toupees by Emily Manktelow Knitting and female activism have a long history, from socks for our boys in the trenches to pussy hats. If you stab your finger, don't bleed on the quilt. (Photo, K.Sherretts) STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts Points of light As I usually do when I'm visiting, I spent a morning quilting with the ladies at my mom's church. While we work, they talk matter-of-factly about their gardens, families, doctor visits, neighbors that need a hand. They are kind and funny. It's hard for me to believe that most of them still support a president and a party that has so completely abandoned not only their interests, but their basic values. (Benjamin Soskis in the Washington Post argues that the Republican Party, remade in Trump’s image, no longer cares about volunteerism and service).
