Felices Fiestas to all of you. Wherever you are, Sevilla, the US or any other part of the world, we hope you find time to relax, decompress, and reflect on the past 12 months and what you would like to do in the coming year. In these challenging times inquiry, reflection, and action make our lives more meaningful and rewarding. 2017 was far from easy — but it made us stronger, brought us together, and gave us a sense of purpose as we enter 2018. American Resistance Sevilla Pub Gathering & Prep for Women's March Thursday, January 11, 8:30 pm. Merchant Pub, Calle Canalejas, 12 Let's raise a glass together while we discuss the final details of Seville's Women's March coming up on Saturday, January 20 We'll provide poster-making materials for you to take home. No, we're not going to sit around in the pub drinking and lettering posters; that's a road to disaster, or at least sloppy spelling and beer-stained placards! STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts Here and there All of us living here in Spain will have our own reactions to this essay by Umair Haque on life in Europe vs. America: “every single thing you can think of that impacts how well, happily, meaningfully, and sanely you live is worse in America, by a very long way.” But his argument goes beyond who has better coffee or trains and into the area of social contacts and politics. It has generated a lot of online disagreement, like this exchange on the Gist podcast (starts at 23:15, 8 min appox). Peace on earth, people of good will! Kathy Sherretts Article: The New York Times: Dr. King’s Interconnected World by Drew Dellinger Dr. King, in his last Christmas sermon before his assassination, anticipated much of the ecological consciousness and environmental concerns of the next 50 years, and the vital links between ecology and social justice. Article: Washington Post: Memphis to Jefferson Davis and Nathan Bedford Forrest: ‘Na na na na, hey, hey, goodbye’ by Fred Barbash The city of Memphis executed a legal maneuver that allowed the removal of two Confederate statues. Mayor Jim Strickland said the city was particularly anxious to get the job done now, in advance of the 50th anniversary of King’s death. Podcast: WNYC/New Yorker Radio Hour: Children's Letters to Satan, and Other Christmas Stories (5 min) Thanks to minor misspellings and very poor penmanship, hundreds of children’s requests for holiday gifts are sent to Satan. (The podcast continues with NY Times publisher A. G. Sulzberger’s discussion of taking over one of the world’s leading news institutions during a complicated time for journalism, 50 min). STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts Excretus Ex Est Altitudine* The Senate has passed its version of tax reform, and now begins the wrangling to reconcile differences between the House and Senate bills. Nothing changes until the president signs a final bill into law; and its long-term effects on health care, employment, and state tax revenues will not be seen until many months or years after that. An email arrived from our accountant this morning, alerting her clients to the future elimination of the deductions for professional expenses, as well as other probable changes. “…And if you’re still not sure how this standard deduction vs. itemized deduction thing works, there is a terrific video starring Richard Rubin of the Wall Street Journal and some tax-related ‘sacred cows’”. In other news, digital privacy and music education, or the loss thereof. -Kathy Sherretts * according to the late Sir Terry Pratchett, “Shat Upon from a Great Height” Article: The Guardian: What can we learn from an orchestra of broken instruments? by Nadja Sayej Composer David Lang will premiere his “Symphony for a Broken Orchestra” in Philadelphia, to call attention to funding cuts in public music education. The piece features broken musical instruments from the Philadelphia School District, which has no budget to fix them. Podcast: WNYC: Note to Self: The Lawsuit that could shine a light on Cambridge Analytica (26 min) Cambridge Analytica claims it holds data on over 230 million American voters. It may have given an advantage to the Trump campaign. But this company may share your online marketing profile with political campaigns, retailers, and potentially foreign governments. What if you, the profiled, want to see what Cambridge Analytica has on you? Article: Politico: Why 2020 Will Be the Year of the Woman by Bill Scher The last time America experienced such a jarring moment regarding sexual misconduct was in 1991, when Clarence Thomas' former assistant Anita Hill charged him with sexual harassment in televised confirmation hearings. Anger over Hill’s treatment by the all-white, all-male Senate Judiciary Committee spilled into the next election.
