The $43,000 soundproof booth Pruitt built in his office echos the paranoia of an early era, when secret agents in the TV show Get Smart traded secrets under the Cone of Silence.

STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts

Everything Old is New Again
Remember when NYC’s Shakespeare in the Park got in trouble last summer for a production of Julius Caesar set in Trump's Washington? This play has often been used to comment on contemporary political life, via productions set in an African republic or 1930s Europe or modern-day Chicago. Julius Caesar is the subject of the first episode of Lend Me Your Ears (40 min), a Slate podcast series about Shakespeare’s plays and our modern views on politics. What was going on in Shakespeare’s time that led him to look back to ancient Rome? What do we see in this play when we are worried about our society’s future, and how far does the metaphor hold?
"Crown him?—that;—
And then, I grant, we put a sting in him,
That at his will he may do danger with.
The abuse of greatness is, when it disjoins

Remorse from power..."   Brutus, Act II Scene 1

Slate: The Privilege of 911 by Henry Grabar and Mark Joseph Stern
It’s not just that the police are being called too often—but also that minorities, immigrants, lower-income Americans, and those living with mental illness don’t trust law enforcement enough to call 911 at all.

STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts

What’s on the ballot?
I lived in Bangor, Maine before moving to Spain, and have voted by absentee ballot since then. (I have a collection of teeny little pencils that they used to send with my ballot, in case I was living in some remote area beyond the reach of writing implements.) The Maine primary ballot this year features the ranked-choice voting system that was approved by ballot initiative in the 2016 election. This system is the subject of a NEW ballot initiative to veto the Maine legislature’s repeal of the ranked system. Ranked-choice voting is designed to avoid runoffs in elections where no one candidate reaches a clear majority of the vote.
What's on the ballot in your state this year? Let us know if your local elections feature any quirky candidates, unusual ballot initiatives, or other electoral oddities. Write us at americanresistancesevilla@gmail.com

Since Trump took office, his luxury hotel in Washington has emerged as a political power hub – and is now at the center of a court case about presidential emoluments. This graphic breaks down who’s coming and going at the Trump International Hotel in Washington.

Slate: The Pain We Still Need to Feel by Jamelle Bouie
Montogmery’s new lynching memorial confronts a painful period of American history. We live in a moment when racism—explicit and unapologetic—has returned to a prominent place in American politics. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, presented by the Equal Justice Initiative is a vital and powerful statement against our national tendency to willful amnesia.
