STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts

Luck of the Draw
Editorial cartoonist Rob Rogers was fired by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this week over drawings critical of President Trump. When I drew sports cartoons for the Post-Gazette, years ago, it was the liberal morning publication in a two-newspaper town. At that time Rogers worked for the afternoon Pittsburgh Press; he joined the Post-Gazette staff in 1993. The paper had been gradually drifting to the right for years, until a new publisher and editorial director took a distinctly pro-Trump stance this spring. Rogers had more of his drawings rejected, and was finally fired. See Rogers' last six rejected cartoons here.

Slate: It’s All Too Much, and We Still Have to Care by Dahlia Lithwick
Jeff Sessions says that “if people don’t want to be separated from their children, they should not bring them with them.” This is the “I only beat her because she made me do it” logic that domestic abusers use to blame their victims.

The Internet Archive: Children in prison and other cruelties of prison life by Oscar Wilde
After his 1897 release from Reading Prison, Oscar Wilde wrote to the Daily Chronicle about the children imprisoned there. “The inhuman treatment of a child is always inhuman, by whomsoever it is inflicted. But inhuman treatment by Society is to the child the more terrible because there is no appeal...”

The Supreme Court just ruled in favor of a policy that makes it easier to kick registered voters off Ohio's rolls. Other voting rights cases will be coming before the court before the November elections. It is more important than ever to make sure you are registered to vote in your state!

STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts

Well, THAT went well.
Leaving behind the smoking ruins of the G7 summit, President Trump is now off to meet with the difficult leader of an isolated and potentially dangerous foreign power. I just listened to a podcast about a parallel situation: Richard Nixon’s trip to China in 1972. John Dickerson details the long and careful diplomacy that led up to the event, and the president’s meticulous preparation for his meeting with Premier Chou En-lai.
Even Nixon is looking pretty good these days.

Politico: Meet the guys who tape Trump's papers back together by Annie Karni
Under the Presidential Records Act, the White House must preserve all memos, letters, emails and papers that the president touches, sending them to the National Archives for safekeeping. White House aides were unable to stop Trump from ripping up paper after he was done with it and throwing it in the trash or on the floor.

Look it up, write it down

In addition to picking the candidates for Representative to Congress and Senator, you may be electing a governor in your state this year. With the paralysis in Congress, and the outright abdication of responsibility by so many federal agencies, the role of state government in safeguarding our land and citizens is more important than ever. What are the issues and candidates in your state?

There are state senators and reps on the ballot, as well as judges, DAs, and various state and county level offices; and in many states, ballot initiatives. You can see who and what is on the ballot, both for the primary and this fall, at Ballotpedia. This site compiles information for every state and provides sample ballots and candidate profiles.

I'll be mailing my primary ballot this week.

Just a reminder — overseas voters may need to re-up this year, so be sure to register with FVAP.gov or VoteFromAbroad.org.

Meanwhile, a metaphor opened in the White House grounds this week.

Article (long read):
The New Yorker: Trump vs. the Deep State by Evan Osnos
Amid purges, infighting, and loyalty tests, civil servants liken the Administration’s tactics to a “hostile takeover and occupation.” The federal government is treated like a vanquished foe. Over time, Trump has rid himself of questioners—conformists thrive, dissenters depart, and advisers compete to be the most explicitly quiescent.
