STOP, LOOK, LISTEN! by Kathy Sherretts Congratulations to us! Last week Democrats won in state and local races at every level—many of them first-time candidates activated by the Trump presidency, and supported by a community of Resisters. We mentioned it back in July, but it’s worth repeating: sign up for the Legislative Action Center's MegaVote. It's a good way to stay informed—or rather, to inform yourself—about upcoming actions in the US Congress. The Senate will be voting on Trump's nominees to the Federal Courts. Since these are lifetime appointments, their effects will last far beyond the current administration. And you’re getting nominees like this guy. So please, contact your representatives. --Kathy Sherretts Podcast: Slate Magazine: Trumpcast. The Giant Pool of Money Laundering by Jacob Weisberg (37 min) Money laundering has long been been viewed as inevitable, and is only prosecuted when it is a useful tool toward some other end. Adam Davidson of the New Yorker explains how money laundering works, and his theory of how the Trump Organization may have backed into it. Article: The Daily Beast: Jenna Abrams Duped the Mainstream Media and the World by Ben Collins and Joseph Cox Jenna Abrams built up an image of a straight-talking, no-nonsense blogger. She pushed divisive views on immigration, segregation, and Donald Trump during the 2016 election. She got attention from national news outlets. Her tweets went viral, earning ridicule from journalists, historians, and celebrities—and support from far-right users coming to her defense. That was the plan all along. Jenna Abrams did not exist. Video: FairVote: Fixing Congress with Fair Representation Voting (6 min) Most voters are locked in congressional districts that are increasingly skewed toward one party. Too many votes simply do not matter. Earlier this year, Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) introduced the Fair Representation Act, a proposal to eliminate the corrosive effects of gerrymandering and hyper-partisanship. If this week has taught us anything, it's about the importance of getting out the vote. But misinformation about fake voter fraud is leading to restrictive new laws and voter suppression. Find out more in Karen McCann's video Why Are We Still Talking About Imaginary Voter Fraud?
